FAQ
Frequently asked questions about your paragliding adventure.
Requirements 🪂
Do I need any experience to go tandem paragliding?
Nope, you don’t need any prior experience at all. All you have to do is take a few steps during takeoff – that’s it. We (and our glider) take care of the rest for you.
What is the age limit for tandem paragliding?
With parental consent, kids from 25 kg can also fly with us (here’s more info on kids tandem paragliding). Our oldest passenger was 92 years young – so age is definitely no excuse!
Are there weight restrictions?
There’s a weight limit of around 120 kg (XNUMX lbs) for tandem paragliding. We ask for your weight in the booking form so we can adjust the equipment accordingly.
I am scared of heights. Can I still fly?
Absolutely! We've discovered that passengers who are afraid of heights can indeed have an enjoyable tandem paragliding experience. When paragliding, you sit comfortably and securely in a harness, supported "from above" by the paraglider. During the flight, you lose your connection to the ground, and this often helps diminish any fear of heights.
If, at any point during the flight, you feel scared, your pilot will be there to take care of you and, if you wish, they can expedite your return to the landing site. Throughout the entire flight, you can communicate with your pilot to ensure your comfort and peace of mind.
Take a look at our blog post 'Paragliding with fear of heights'.
Can several people fly at the same time?
There's nothing quite like flying, except flying with your loved ones! We're delighted to offer you the opportunity to share the flight experience with multiple people through a simultaneous take-off phase.
If you book 2 or more flights at the same time, we will assume that you want to fly together. In general, this is almost always possible with 2-3 people.
If there are more than 4 passengers, the group may be flown one after the other. For example, 2 people may fly at 10:00 a.m. and 2 people may fly at 10:40 a.m. In any case, we will discuss this with you beforehand.
If you request it in advance, we can ideally organize a simultaneous start phase for up to 6 people.
Meeting Point & Spectators 📍
Where is the meeting point?
On the day of your flight, we’ll meet you about 10 minutes before your booked time at the valley station – either at the Elfer lifts or Schlick 2000, depending on your booking. From there, we’ll head up to the launch site together.
How do we get to the launch site?
We’ll take the cable car up to the launch site. At the Elfer lifts in Neustift, the takeoff area is located right next to the mountain station. From the Schlick 2000 mountain station, it’s just about a 5-minute walk together to the launch site.
Getting here: How do I reach the Stubai Valley?
The Stubai Valley is only about a 20-minute drive from Innsbruck. You can also get here easily by public transport: the Regiobus 590 runs directly from Innsbruck into the valley. More details about getting here can be found under Contact us.
Is there free parking at the meeting point?
Yes, parking is available year-round and free of charge at both the Elfer lifts and Schlick 2000.
Can spectators come along too?
Absolutely! Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad, siblings, kids – everyone’s welcome. There’s plenty of room at the launch site, and your spectators can either watch the takeoff or be there to greet you at the landing. It's an experience the whole family can enjoy together!
Bringing kids who don’t want to fly?
If you’re coming with little ones who don’t want (or aren’t yet able) to fly, you don’t have to miss out on a tandem flight. One parent can stay with the kids at the landing area while the other takes the flight. After landing, you can swap, so the second parent can enjoy the adventure too. Just let us know when booking that you’d like to fly one after the other – no problem at all!
Time & Duration 🕑
How far in advance should I book?
Depending on the season and demand, we recommend booking your flight a few days to weeks in advance. If your vacation is already planned, it’s best to secure your tandem flight early – ideally at the beginning of your stay. This way, we have enough flexibility to reschedule in case of bad weather.
How long will I be in the air?
Flight time depends on which flight you pick, usually anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes.
How long does the entire experience take?
For our Earlybird, Discovery, and Panoramic Flights, you can expect about 1 hour. For Thermal Flights, plan on 1,5 to 2 hours so you can fully enjoy the adventure.
How early should I be at the meeting point?
It’s enough to arrive on time or up to 10 minutes before your booked flight time.
Prices, costs & cancellations 💶
How much is the gondola ticket?
You’ll need a mountain ticket (one-way) for the ride up with the gondola. At the Elfer lifts, it costs €17.50, and at Schlick 2000, €25.20. It’s best to buy your ticket on-site before your tandem flight.
With a Stubai Guest Card, you get discounts at both lifts. If you’re staying at an accommodation that includes the Stubai Super Card, you can ride the gondola up for free (1 round trip per day at Elfer lifts or Schlick 2000).
Is the gondola ticket included in the flight price?
No, the cost of the gondola is not included. You can purchase your ticket directly at the valley station, where we’ll meet.
What are the payment options?
You can pay for your flight on-site in cash or by card, or online using the booking form. We recommend paying on-site, as this makes everything particularly hassle-free. If a thermal flight is shorter than planned due to weather, you only pay for the time actually flown. No refunds are available – everything is relaxed and easy.
How much do photos & videos cost?
If you want to get the most out of your flight, we recommend our Photo & Video service for €30,00 per person. That way, you can fully enjoy your flight while we capture your adventure with professional photos and videos for your living room or social media.
How can I cancel my booking?
Your booking is binding, as we reserve the pilot, time, and equipment exclusively for you. If you need to cancel, please email us as soon as possible. Please note that we can only offer a full refund if your cancellation is received at least 24 hours before the scheduled flight. Cancellations within 24 hours will incur a 100% fee. You can find more details in our terms and conditions.
Clothing, Gear & Photos 📸
What should I wear?
- Sturdy, closed shoes (no sandals!)
- Jacket (in winter ski clothing & gloves)
- Sunglasses, optional
Rule of thumb: It's better to bring too much clothing than too little. If it gets unexpectedly warm at the launch site, you can easily stow extra layers in your harness. Backpacks can be safely stored at our meeting point, as there’s no room for them during the tandem flight.
Can I wear glasses during the flight?
Of course, you can wear your glasses while tandem flying. On clear days, we recommend wearing sunglasses. With glasses or sunglasses, you’re well protected from the wind while flying.
Can I bring a backpack?
No problem at all. You can safely store your backpack at the meeting point and pick it up again after the landing. Small backpacks (up to around 20 liters) can even be securely stowed in the harness, so you can take them with you on the flight.
Can I take photos myself?
As a passenger, your hands are free, so you can certainly take photos or videos with your own camera. Please note that we are not responsible for any damage or loss of your equipment. Make sure your camera or smartphone is securely attached with a strap or similar.
If you want to get the most out of your flight, we recommend our Photo & Video service for €30,00 per person. That way, you can fully enjoy your flight while we capture your adventure with professional photos and videos for your living room or social media.
Weather & Season 🌤️
What kind of weather do you fly in?
What happens in bad weather?
If the weather isn’t suitable, your flight will be canceled free of charge – you won’t incur any costs. We always try to notify you as early as possible. Even if the forecast looks good, local wind conditions can sometimes prevent a flight right before takeoff. We appreciate your understanding in case of last-minute cancellations.
When is the best time to fly?
Anytime! For thermal flights, the best months are roughly May to September, when the air is pleasantly warm and thermals are strongest. But flying over freshly snow-covered winter landscapes is such a unique experience, it’s something everyone should try at least once. We fly whenever conditions are suitable – Monday to Sunday, January through December.
Can you fly in winter?
Absolutely! Winter paragliding is a special experience. Imagine a fresh layer of snow overnight, and the next morning you’re soaring over a landscape blanketed in white – every peak, tree, and rooftop covered in a thick layer of snow. We believe everyone should experience this at least once in their life.
What are thermals?
Thermals are essential for extending our time in the air with a paraglider. When paragliding, we harness the power of rising warm air, or thermals, to lift us upward. The masters of riding thermals are none other than the birds themselves!
Process & Security ✅
Why book with TANDEM STUBAI?
Because you’re our main focus! We deliberately take more time for each flight so you can fully enjoy your experience. Instead of squeezing in as many flights as possible in a day, we focus on quality over quantity. This way, there’s plenty of time for personal chats, individual attention, and creating unforgettable moments in the air. Others might do things differently – but we believe a one-of-a-kind adventure deserves full attention!
How does tandem paragliding work?
We’ve put together all the details about the flight process on a dedicated page just for you.
Am I insured as a passenger?
Every pilot on our team carries a special liability insurance to cover both passenger and pilot during the tandem flight. This insurance is legally required and provides extensive coverage. You don’t need your own insurance for the flight.
Which pilot will fly with me?
You’ll be flying with Stefan, Richi, Bene or Johanna. During busy periods, we may also be supported by external tandem pilots – but there will always be someone from the TANDEM STUBAI team with you.
How dangerous is paragliding?
- The pilot Training to become a paraglider involves many exams and tests. You are only allowed to take tandem training after years of experience in solo flying. This involves more special training and a large number of exams. You also have to obtain a medical certificate to prove that you are physically fit. You can therefore assume that tandem pilots have above-average flying skills, years of experience and a high sense of responsibility.
- The weather We closely monitor the weather conditions in Stubaital and its surroundings every day of the year. We will only take you on a tandem flight when the weather is suitable. In all other cases, we prioritize safety and choose not to fly.
- Equipment In paragliding, we have to do a yearly check, similar to a car inspection. We regularly ensure that the equipment is in top technical condition and always ready for safe use.
At TANDEM STUBAI, we are fully aware of these three risk factors and our significant responsibility. Therefore, you can rest assured that you don't need to be concerned about potential dangers. Safety always remains our utmost priority! You can find out more about saftey in this blog post.
